Historic American Sweep Marks Milestone at 2024 TCS New York City Marathon
In a groundbreaking moment for American wheelchair athletics, Daniel Romanchuk and Susannah Scaroni achieved a historic first at the 2024 TCS New York City Marathon, becoming the first American duo to claim victory in both wheelchair divisions on the same day.
Men’s Division: A Photo Finish
Romanchuk secured his third New York City Marathon title with a thrilling victory, crossing the finish line in 1:36:31. The two-time champion (2018, 2019) edged out Great Britain’s David Weir by just five seconds in an intense sprint to the finish. Japan’s Tomoki Suzuki rounded out the podium, finishing third in 1:36:44.

“It was a very tight race all the way,” Romanchuk reflected after his victory. “It came down to giving everything I had and hoping that was enough.”
Women’s Division: Dominant Performance
Susannah Scaroni delivered an extraordinary performance in the women’s wheelchair division, claiming her second TCS New York City Marathon title with one of the most commanding victories in the event’s history. Scaroni completed the course in 1:48:05, establishing a remarkable 10-minute lead over her closest competitors.
The podium featured additional American excellence, with five-time champion Tatyana McFadden securing second place in 1:58:47. Switzerland’s Manuela Schar took third, finishing in 1:59:20.

“This course challenges you every step of the way,” Scaroni said after her victory. “I just tried to meet each of those challenges, and I’m really thankful for the outcome.”
