The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has removed women’s T52 100 meters event from next year’s Tokyo Paralympic Games.

IPC has already informed the Tokyo organizing committee and National Paralympic Committees (NPCs) about the move after noticing that the athletic event did not meet the minimum required eligible criteria.

Women’s T52 100m along with men’s high jump T64, women’s javelin F13 and 4x100m relay were under the scanner since 6 February 2018.

The NPCs were informed if the events identified above did not meet the minimum eligibility criteria by the end of the 2019 World Para Athletics Championships, they would be removed without replacement events being added to the Tokyo 2020 medal event program.

While the men’s T64 high jump, women’s F13 javelin throw and a 4x100m medley relay event were all found to have met the criteria, lack of competitors in the women’s T52 100m forced IPC to scrap the event for Tokyo.

Only five athletes competed in the women’s T52 100m competition at the Para Athletics World Championships in Dubai, representing four National Paralympic Committees.

The USA’s Kerry Morgan had won in Dubai with a time of 21.16 seconds followed by Japan’s Teruyo Tanaka and compatriot Yuka Kiyama. The World Para Athletics event program will now feature 167 medal events (93 male, 73 female and 1 mixed).

The athlete quota allocation remains (unaffected) at 1100 (630 male and 470 female). In all the Paralympic Games will now feature a total of 539 medal events.
