COMPETITION SCHEDULE REVEALED FOR LA28 GAMES
Official organizing committee LA28 has released the event schedule covering the 14 days and more than 1,100 hours of competition making up every medal event at the Paralympic Games when they come to Los Angeles in 2028.
“With more sports and days of competition than ever, LA28 is setting the stage for a legendary Paralympic Games,” says the organization’s Chief Athlete Officer Janet Evans on Wednesday.
The 2028 edition of the world’s third largest sporting event will be the biggest yet, featuring 560 medal events over a record 23 sports, taking place at 20 venues and seven competition zones across Los Angeles.
More than 15,000 athletes will be descending on LA to compete in both the Olympics and Paralympics. It marks the third time Los Angeles has hosted an Olympic Games event after 1932 and 1984, although it has never hosted the Paralympics. And 2028 will mark the first time the number of female athletes is larger than the number of men.
Among the sports and events making their debut at LA28:
- The new para climbing competition showcases 40 male and 40 female athletes across four medal events per gender.
- In the para swimming competition, a new relay has been added for athletes with intellectual impairments.
- By splitting a classification that was combined into a single event at the Paris 2024 Games, one new women’s event has been added to both the para table tennis and para triathlon competitions. This means gender parity for both sports.
LA28 will have both the largest field of athletes ever assembled, as well as the most gender-balanced Games yet. In fact, four other sports are also planning to achieve gender equality for the first time in 2028: para archery, para judo, para powerlifting and boccia.
Also for the first time, LA28 will feature sporting events scheduled before the opening ceremony, creating even more opportunities to showcase the athletes. In the two days leading up to the ceremony, wheelchair rugby and boccia competitions will commence.
And for the final weekend of the LA28 Paralympic Games, the action heats up. On Aug. 26, 2028 — Super Saturday — champions will be named and 50 gold medals handed out across 15 finals sessions in para archery, para badminton, para canoe, para climbing, para cycling road, para judo, para powerlifting, para swimming, para table tennis, sitting volleyball, wheelchair basketball and wheelchair tennis.
On the final day of LA28, Aug. 27, 2028, seven more finals sessions will result in 20 more medals being awarded, topping the amount given on the final day of the Atlanta 1996 Paralympic Games.
The Games’ opening ceremony takes place on Aug. 15, 2028, at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m PT, with the closing ceremony coming 12 days later on Aug. 27, 2028, at 10:30 p.m. ET/7:30 p.m. PT. Event tickets will be made available in 2027, with more event and venue details due later in 2026.
